Fr. Erps will play the part of a Catholic priest who is called to baptize a premature infant that has little chance of survival. The scene takes place at the end of the episode and was shot on the roof of the Chicago Hilton in mid-August.
The cameo appearance for Fr. Erps grew out of a conversation he had with his friend Jack Orman, the award-winning show's executive producer. The two have been friends since 1988 when Orman was a student at Loyola-Marymount University in Los Angeles, where Fr. Erps served as campus minister before arriving at BC in August.
"We were talking one day and I told him there weren't enough priests on the show," said Fr. Erps. Priests are common visitors to emergency rooms to help those with spiritual and sacramental needs, he explained, especially in a city with a large Catholic population like Chicago, where the series is set.
"So he wrote a part for a priest and I volunteered for it," said Fr. Erps.
