The son of a Nigerian tribal chief, Cardinal Arinze was appointed to the council in 1985, the same year Pope John Paul II named him a cardinal.
The council's responsibilities are to promote mutual understanding, respect and collaboration between Catholics and followers of other religious traditions; encourage the study of religions; and promote the formation of persons dedicated to dialogue.
