New Twist on Old Tale for Burns

New Twist on Old Tale for Burns

On the eve of St. Patrick's Day, the Burns Library received a unique addition to its holdings of Irish literature: A copy of the first Spanish translation of Ireland's famed centuries-old epic The Tain donated by the Mexican government.

To commemorate the acquisition, Burns Librarian Robert O'Neill welcomed Mexican Consul Carlos Rico and Vice Consul of Cultural Affairs Taide Navarrete-Pellicer to campus on March 16.

During their visit, O'Neill pointed out the library's other issues and editions of the text by Thomas Kinsella, whose English translation of the Tain Bo Cuailnge is considered by many the definitive retelling of the ancient Irish tale concerning the Cattle Raid of Cooley and the heroic warrior Cuchulainn.

"It is an honor to add the first Spanish translation of the Kinsella text to our Tain holdings," O'Neill said.
