Jesuits Remembered

JESUITS REMEMBERED: At a Nov. 16 event in the Quad, Chaplain Daniel Leahy pounded a cross into the ground representing one of the individuals martyred in El Salvador during the 1980s. The event marked the 10th anniversary of the murder of six Jesuits, their housekeeper and her daughter by Salvadoran troops at the University of Central America. While the ceremony was taking place on campus, members of the University community were in El Salvador for a service. On Nov. 19, several faculty, staff and students traveled to Georgia to call on the United States government to close the School of the Americas there, where a number of Salvadoran military personnel were trained. Next week, on Dec. 1, the University will sponsor a Mass and the East Coast premiere of a documentary, "Enemies of War," about the Salvadoran civil war [see Calendar]. US Rep. John Joseph Moakley (D-Mass.), who played a leading role in bringing the Jesuits' murderers to justice, is scheduled to attend the event.
