A native of Boston, Fr. Callahan entered the Jesuit order in 1937, and was ordained by then-Archbishop Richard Cushing in 1949. He received a doctorate from Gregorian University in Rome in 1953 and taught at the Jesuit Seminary in Weston until 1966, when he joined the Theology Department at Boston College. He retired from teaching in 1990.
Described by many as a friendly, learned and pastoral man, Fr. Callahan also took on the duties of chaplain to the School of Nursing in 1970. Over the next 25 years, hundreds of nursing students found him to be a patient listener and gracious priest.
Fr. Callahan was buried at the Jesuit Cemetery in Weston.
