Social Welfare Research Institute Director Prof. Paul Schervish (Sociology) has been awarded a grant through the Fulbright Scholar Program to work at University College Cork in Ireland for the 2000-2001 academic year.
Schervish said he expects to discuss his research on philanthropy and fund-raising, areas of increasing interest to Ireland as the nation becomes wealthier, and therefore more attuned to private funding for public purposes.
"For my part," Schervish added, "I hope to learn about the empirical and cultural terrain of finance and philanthropy in a nation where there is more cultural unity than in the US, and in a setting where the state is more responsible for social needs."
