Boston College will be officially closed Thursday, Dec. 23 through Monday, Dec. 27, and on Friday, Dec. 31 through Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000. However, because of the possibility for unanticipated systems problems due to Y2K transition, some additional staff will be on call for New Year's weekend.
Boston College has made every effort to ensure that its telecommunications systems will be fully operational throughout the transition period, although we cannot guarantee that all outside phone systems will be functional. Major service providers, including Bell Atlantic, AT&T and MCI, have expressed confidence in their systems. Boston College is also dependent on certain infrastructures such as power, water, gas, etc. These vendors have also expressed confidence in their systems.
Boston College has produced a business continuity plan that focuses on reducing the risks of Y2K-induced business failures at the University. The plan i s primarily oriented to preservation of life and property. The worst-case scenario for January of 2000 would be protracted loss of electrical power and telephone services. Boston College's contingency plan attempts to ensure the University's ability to produce a minimum level of service in the event of failure of mission - critical systems.
THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
-- For police, medical or public safety emergencies call Campus Police at 552-4444.
-- 552-INFO will have the latest Boston College Y2K information after 9 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2000.
-- The mainframe computer (UIS, NOTIS) will be shut down at 5 p.m. on Dec. 30 and is anticipated to be back on line by 8 p.m. Jan. 2, if there are no problems.
-- Voice mail, e-mail and InfoEagle services will be available remotely and will not be shut down unless there are problems.
-- The student network will be shut down starting Dec. 20 and will be back on line starting at 9 a.m. on Jan. 3, if there are no problems.
-- All non-essential administrative buildings' computer networks will be shut down starting at 3 p.m. on Dec. 30 and will be back on line starting at 9 a.m. on Jan. 1, if there are no problems.
WHAT TO DO AND NOT TO DO BEFORE YOU LEAVE FOR CHRISTMAS BREAK
-- Back up all important data files from your workstation onto a diskette or zip disk. If you maintain a server, back up all data through your normal backup process. If you need assistance, contact your technology consultant and he or she can guide you through the process.
-- Shut down all experiments.
-- Shut down all equipment (computers, printers, fax machines, copy machines, etc) to avoid loss of data.
-- Unplug all equipment to protect against electrical surges.
-- Turn off all lights.
-- To avoid heat loss in case of failures, close all windows, drapes and blinds.
-- Clean, remove all perishable food, defrost and unplug all office refrigerators (excluding lab refrigerators that are connected to emergency power outlets).
-- Save a hard copy of this information sheet.
-- Be patient.
-- Do not "test" phone, Internet or electrical systems at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1 just to verify their operation. Peak demand may cause far more distress for these systems tha n any other Y2K-related factors.
-- Do not assume that any technical problem you may experience during the transition weekend is Y2K related. Don't panic.
-- Do not fall prey to Y2K hoaxes. Do not give out your Social Security number or PIN number.
