SBC Chief Says Firm to Compete in Boston Market

The chief executive officer of one of the world's largest telecommunications companies announced at a Nov. 30 Boston College's Chief Executives Club event that his company will be competing in the Boston market within a year.

Edward Whitacre Jr., chairman and CEO of SBC Communications, told the gathering of Greater Boston business leaders at the Boston Harbor Hotel that his company will be offering comprehensive telecommunications services in the area no later than October 2000.

"Alexander Graham Bell made the first phone call here in Boston," he said. "Now we're coming full circle here again."

Whitacre said SBC, which provides telephone, Internet access and wireless services, would offer business and residential customers the opportunity to "bundle" all of their telecommunications needs in "one bill, one service . "

He said Boston's high-tech industry is an excellent customer base for his company's services.
