"We ask the blessings of the Holy Spirit on the academic year ahead," said University Chaplain Richard Cleary, SJ, who will be among the Boston College Jesuits concelebrating the Mass. "The reason for having this Mass is to bring everyone together, Catholic and non-Catholic, to pray for a safe, productive and peaceful year."
More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the Mass, traditionally held at Catholic universities at the outset of the academic year. It will be the only Mass sponsored by the University Chaplaincy on campus that Sunday. Faculty and staff also are encouraged to bring members of their families, Fr. Cleary added.
"This is not just for students," he said. "We're bringing the different elements of the community together."
Following the Mass, a cookout will be held on the Bapst Library lawn, featuring performances by University music groups. In case of rain, the event will be held in the Flynn Recreation Complex.
