The Boston College Neighborhood Center is again organizing the annual Health Awareness Week in Allston-Brighton, a series of 15 events over 10 days aimed at promoting a healthy community.

The Neighborhood Center has enlisted the participation of 10 community groups and health care agencies, including the School of Nursing, said Neighborhood Center Director Maria DiChiappari.

"We have the resources to organize this event and make it happen," DiChiappari said. "Reaching out to organizations and residents in the Allston-Brighton community and serving them in this way fits nicely with the Neighborhood Center's mission."

The week began on Oct. 14 with infant and child CPR classes for parents and resumes today with a health fair at the Veronica Smith Senior Center co-sponsored by SON. This week's events conclude on Oct. 16 with a mammogram education and outreach program at the Neighborhood Center.

Next week's events will begin on Oct. 18 with a five-kilometer road race through Brighton co-sponsored by the Neighborhood Center.

On Monday, Oct. 19, St. Elizabeth's Medical Center will host a health fair co-sponsored by SON, and the Allston-Brighton YMCA will sponsor an aerobics class.

Tuesday's activities include free flu vaccinations at the Joseph Smith Community Center, an adult first-aid program at St. Elizabeth's, and a nutrition workshop for parents and children at the Bread & Circus community room.

The Neighborhood Center will be the site of free mammograms for uninsured and under-insured women on Wednesday, Oct. 21. The Smith Center will again be the site of free flu vaccinations that day, and a body fat analysis will be offered at Caritas Health Services in Brighton.

Events slated for Thursday, Oct. 22 include a muscle conditioning class at the Allston-Brighton YMCA and an adult CPR course at St. Elizabeth's.

The final event in the series will be an oral health and physical fitness day for students at the Edison Middle School on Friday, Oct. 23. The event is co-sponsored by SON, the Neighborhood Center and the Athletic Association.

More details about individual events are available by calling the Neighborhood Center at ext. 2-0445.
