Sophomore Dies Following Car Accident

A memorial service was held on May 12 at Christ Church Christiana Hundred in Greenville, Del., for Gretchen Ann Bussard '01, who died May 8 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident outside Philadelphia. Bussard had been visiting her family in Oxford, Pa., and was driving to the airport on May 7 to return to Boston College for exams when her car was involved in an eight-vehicle crash in Chadds Ford, Pa. She died the following day. A family friend was killed in the accident and Bussard's mother, Joan, was injured.

A Mass was celebrated on May 9 in Bussard's memory in Vanderslice Hall, where she shared an eight-person suite.

Suitemates recalled Bussard as a warm-hearted friend who was always smiling, and who hoped to have a career in social work.

"Her face could light up a room," said Kate Barry, a fellow sophomore in the Lynch School of Education. "She had the biggest heart: Even if she were having a bad day, she could make you feel better. We can still hear her laughter."

Gretchen and Joan Bussard were active in charitable efforts to provide trained dogs to assist the physically disabled, and their friend who died in the accident was to have received a dog, according to published reports.

Bussard was raised in Wilmington, Del., graduating from the Tower Hill School, where she captained the volleyball team and received the Spiller Achievement Award.

She leaves her parents, Joan and Donald; a brother Luke; grandparents Carolyn Bussard of Wilmington, Del. and John Barnhart, MD, of Lewes, Del., and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a favorite charity.
