Lehane will manage the Office of the President and will work with senior University officials in support of the president's initiatives and plans. Among other duties, Lehane will serve as the principal staff liaison to the Board of Trustees and will, at times, serve as the president's representative to various internal and external audiences.
"I consider myself so fortunate to have someone with Jim's extensive experience and achievements joining my staff," said Fr. Leahy. "He knows a lot about Boston College from his undergraduate days and he clearly want to help advance his alma mater."
"I feel like an incoming freshman," said Lehane, who assumed the post on Nov. 24. "It struck me recently how very different a place Boston College is, physically and in so many other ways, than the place I remember from my days as a student.
"I've got lots to learn, but hopefully something to offer as well," he added. "Though this will be something brand new for me, I feel very welcomed already and I think I'm going to make some very good friends in my new position."
Lehane returns to BC after a career in public relations at NYNEX.
Since 1994, he worked in the public affairs division of NYNEX, first as executive director, then as managing director. He was in charge of all aspects of public affairs for the company, including policies and strategy, educational partnerships, relations with the mayor of Boston and his cabinet, community relations, philanthropic activity, and implementation of the Enhanced 911 service in all New England states.
From 1988 to 1993, Lehane was managing director of public relations for NYNEX, which entailed supervision of the companies media relations efforts, speech-writing for top NYNEX executives and production of publications.
Previously, Lehane was director of corporate communications from 1986-88; district manager for community relations from 1984-86; and Vermont district manager for public relations and community relations from 1982-84. For 10 years, beginning in 1972, he served in a variety of field and staff assignments in the company's commercial, marketing and operator services departments.
Prior to his career at NYNEX, Lehane was a tenured high school English and public speaking instructor in the Scituate school system.
Lehane is married to Susan (Anderson). They have four children - Julie, 26, Jamie, 24, Jenna, 22, and James III, 21 - and two grandchildren.
