Faculty Are Invited To Breaking The Barriers Ball

A convivial BC tradition continues on Dec. 5 when the 11th annual Breaking the Barriers Ball brings students and faculty together for a holiday social at the O'Connell House Student Union on Upper Campus.

Organizers hope to attract as many faculty members as possible to this year's ball, in keeping with the event's mission of encouraging teachers and students to get to know each other better outside of the classroom.

Each student who purchases a ticket for the ball will be given an invitation for a faculty member of his or her choice, in the hope the teacher will attend.

"Faculty have much to offer the students and it only serves to enrich the quality of the BC student's education to relate with the faculty in a casual and relaxed manner," said O'Connell House Public Relations Manager Stephen M. Grieco '99. "Faculty, too, may find that there are many interesting students who are interesting people, as well."

The ball will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight at O'Connell House. Entertainment will be provided by the BC bOp! jazz ensemble and student a capella groups such as the Sharps, the Heightsmen, the Voices of Imani and the Acoustics.

An array of appetizers and pasta, as well as dessert, will be provided by Boston College Catering. "Over the years, the food has become one of the most anticipated parts of the event," said Grieco.

Grieco said last year's ball drew some 400 students and 40 faculty.

Student tickets, at $8 apiece, are available at the McElroy ticket booth. Faculty attend free.
