Merkert Evacuated After Minor Spill

Merkert Chemistry Center was closed for more than five hours on Jan. 9 following a laboratory chemical spill.

No one was reported injured in the incident, which occurred shortly before 2:45 p.m. when several glass containers containing liquid chemicals fell to the floor after a shelf collapsed. Arthur Andersen, safety officer in the Environmental Health and Safety Office, said the compounds were "various organic, carbon-based" chemicals.

Following the accident, Merkert was ordered evacuated while a hazardous material team from the Boston Fire Department inspected the scene, and a private cleanup crew was called. Merkert was re-opened to faculty and students shortly before 9:15 p.m.
