Malek, who joined the University in September of 1983, coordinated two major courses in the SON baccalaureate program, provided research advisement at the master's level and taught qualitative research in the doctoral program. Her research interests included the application of pain management guidelines for clinical practice, and the undertreatment of pain.

She was a Boston College nominee for the Professors of the Year Program sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
In addition to her teaching and research at Boston College, Malek practiced at New England Baptist and Newton Wellesley hospitals. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tu, the nursing honor society, the American Nurses Association and the Eastern Nursing Research Society.
Prior to her arrival at Boston College, Malek taught at New England Baptist Hospital and Lasell Junior College. She received her bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and earned a master's degree in nursing and a doctoral degree in education from Boston College.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph; her son Joseph, a Boston College freshman; and her daughter, Meridith.
