An alumna of Spelman, Hopps has served as a trustee since 1989. Last October, the Atlanta-based college appointed her to chair a presidential search committee for the successor to Johnnetta B. Cole. The committee announced last month that it has selected Acting US Surgeon General Audrey Manley for the post.
Founded in 1881, Spelman is renowned for educating generations of black women who have gone onto leadership roles in education, business, politics and other areas.
"I am very honored to have been chosen for this position," Hopps said. "Spelman has a long and distinguished history, and is a leading liberal arts institution, and I look forward to doing whatever I can as trustee chair in helping Spelman set and achieve its goals."
