Boston College has received a $1 million gift from the Yawkey Foundation that will support construction of the planned Student Sports Center on Lower Campus.

"The Yawkey Foundation grant to help fund the Student Sports Center is a wonderful act of generosity to Boston College and its students," said University President William P. Leahy, SJ. "Countless students will benefit from the gift."

John Harrington, executive director of the Yawkey Foundation and chief executive officer of the Boston Red Sox, said, "We think the Boston College sports program is tops in the country and we support it through the Yawkey Scholarship, which goes to a member of the Boston College baseball team.

"But we also realize the importance of sports and athletics for intercollegiate athletes. The Yawkey Foundation's main goal is to support youth athletics and youth education, and this gift fits our goals and mission to a T."

According to Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk, "We are very grateful for the generosity of the Yawkey Foundation in support of a facility that is going to touch the lives of everyone on campus. The encouragement of John Harrington further emphasizes the importance of active physical participation as part of the educational experience for every Boston College student."

The Student Sports Center is planned as a replacement for the aging Recreation Complex. It will be located on approximately the same site as the RecPlex, adjacent to the north side of Alumni Stadium.
