Thomas Grey, SJ, Dies

A funeral Mass was celebrated April 2 in St. Mary's Chapel for Prof. Emeritus Thomas J. Grey, SJ (History), who died March 27 following a heart attack. He was 78.

Fr. Grey taught American history for 32 years at the University after serving as assistant dean of the School of Education from 1953 to 1957. Colleagues remembered him as a devoted scholar who had an abiding love for books - he kept a personal library of more than 250 volumes in his room at St. Mary's Hall - who served with equal distinction as a school administrator.

In 1957, he became principal of Cheverus High School in Portland, Me., and was widely credited with turning the Jesuit school into a top-flight academy. He returned to BC in 1961, and retired in 1993.

Burial was in the Jesuit Cemetery at Campion Center in Weston.
