Neighborhood Center Plans Health Awareness Week in A/B

The Boston College Neighborhood Center has organized a series of events in Allston-Brighton as part of Health Awareness Week, Oct. 24-28.

The center will co-sponsor 10 events throughout the week, ranging from a health screening to a 5 kilometer road race. Students from the School of Nursing will participate in many of the events, which are co-sponsored by St. Elizabeth's Hospital, The Joseph M. Smith Community Center, Franciscan Children's Hospital, Healthy Boston and the Allston-Brighton YMCA.

"This is a unique way for Boston College and the neighborhood to work together to address some of the health concerns of the neighborhood," said Center Director Theodore Dziak, SJ. "We hope that Allston-Brighton residents will take advantage of these services."

The week begins with free mammogram screenings for women over 50 without health insurance on Tuesday, Oct. 24th from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Neighborhood Center, 425 Washington St., Brighton. Later that day, from 6-10 p.m., a CPR course will be offered at the YMCA.

On Wednesday, from 1-4 p.m., an immunization van will offer vaccinations for children in the Brighton Police Station parking lot. From 2-4 p.m., blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol screenings will be offered at St. Elizabeth's Seton Auditorium. Free flu shots will be administered at the Smith Community Health Center from 2-3:30 p.m. and a CPR course will be offered at the Seton Auditorium from 7-10 p.m.

Two events are scheduled for Thursday. From 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., a health fair will be held at the Veronica Smith Senior Center, where Allston-Brighton residents can receive flu and pneumonia shots. A breast cancer discussion will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Brighton Library.

On Friday, at the WestEnd Boys and Girls Club, Allston-Brighton Against Drugs will lead a discussion for teens from 7-8:30 p.m. The event is co-sponosred by the Boston College HEART Program.

The final event of the week is a 5K road race run/walk on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. at the YMCA. Applications may be obtained by calling 782-3535.
