University President J. Donald Monan, SJ, will be the guest of honor at "A Legacy of Excellence: Boston College Celebrates J. Donald Monan, SJ," a tribute to Fr. Monan's 24-year presidency at Boston College, on Wednesday, May 1 in Conte Forum. Doors will open at 4 p.m., with the formal program beginning at 4:30 p.m.

All Board of Trustees members, administrators, faculty, staff and students, as well as selected alumni and friends of Boston College are invited to the event, which will include a program of speakers, a video, music and other presentations.

Academic Vice President and Dean of Faculties William B. Neenan, SJ, will serve as master of ceremonies and Trustee Chairman Geoffrey T. Boisi will speak on behalf of the board about Fr. Monan's contributions to the University and the larger community. In addition, Executive Vice President Frank Campanella will discuss long-range planning for the administrative team that has worked under Fr. Monan, while Prof. Mary Brabeck (SOE) and Prof. Robert Faulkner (Political Science) will speak on behalf of the faculty.

A committee chaired by Senior Vice President James P. McIntyre has been planning the event since last semester and has received enormous support from all facets of the University, he said.

"I'm impressed with the widespread interest on campus in recognizing Fr. Monan for his many contributions to Boston College," he said. "Boston College is a great institution, but it did not happen accidentally and people recognize that. They all feel an enormous sense of gratitude for what Fr. Monan has accomplished and want to pay tribute to the excellence and dignity that has characterized Boston College during his tenure."

Invitations to the event will be mailed to University employees' homes in late March.
