Chesmistry faculty members Udayan Mohanty and Mary Roberts

Mohanty, Roberts are AAAS fellows

Chemistry professors Udayan Mohanty and Mary Roberts are the latest Boston College scientists chosen to be fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

AAAS, the world's largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal Science, announced last week that Mohanty and Roberts were among the 449 association members selected as fellows this year. Election as an AAAS Fellow is an honor bestowed upon members by their peers in recognition of meritorious efforts to advance science or its applications.

Mohanty was chosen for significant advances in theory ofpolyelectrolyte behavior of nucleic acids and to statistical mechanical theories of supercooled liquids, glasses, and quasicrystals, according to the association.

The AAAS selected Roberts for distinguished contributionsusing Nuclear Magnetic Resonance to define how interfaces modulate lipolytic enzymes and the role and regulation of novel solutes in extremophiles.

The two will be honored at the Fellows Forum during the AAAS Annual Meeting in February in San Francisco.

Previously named AAAS Fellows at Boston College include Prof. David Burgess (Biology), Prof. Paul Davidovits (Chemistry), Prof. J. Christopher Hepburn (Geology and Geophysics), Louise and James Vanderslice and Family Professor in Chemistry Lawrence Scott, Prof. Zhifeng Ren (Physics) and Assoc. Prof. Joseph Tecce (Psychology). -Greg Frost
