Former LSOE Faculty Member Power Dies
A funeral Mass was held Sept. 16 at St. Joseph's Church in Needham for Prof. Emeritus Edward J. Power (LSOE), a member of the Boston College faculty from 1961-91 who died in Needham on Sept. 12. He was 84.
Prof. Power was the author of 16 books on the history of education and Catholic education in the United States, including Religion and the Public Schools in 19th Century America: The Contribution of Orestes A. Brownson (1997), in which he chronicled the impact of controversial 19th-century editor and philosopher Brownson on American public and Catholic education.
A native of Wells, Minn., Prof. Power served with the US Army during World War II. He graduated from St. John's College in Minnesota and earned his master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Notre Dame.
Prof. Power was the husband of the late Helen (Salese) Power. He leaves four children and seven grandchildren.
Prof. Power was buried with full military honors at St. Mary's Cemetery in Needham.
