Former Eagles Are Bound for Winter Olympics
Three former Boston College student-athletes will be competing for the United States in the Winter Olympic Games to be held later this month in Turin, Italy.
Tyler Jewell '99, a former BC lacrosse player, has been named to the USA Snowboarding Team and will compete in the alpine slalom event in Turin on Feb. 22 and 23. Originally a ski racer, Jewell has participated in national alpine snowboard events for the last five years. He is from Sudbury, Mass.
Bill Guerin and Brian Gionta, who are among the many former Eagles active in the National Hockey League, will play for Team USA in the Olympic ice hockey competition that begins on Feb. 15.
Guerin played two seasons at Boston College before joining the USA National Team in 1992. The rugged Wilbraham, Mass., native has played 13 seasons in the NHL with the New Jersey Devils, Edmonton Oilers, Boston Bruins and his current team, the Dallas Stars.
Guerin also was as member of the 1998 and 2002 United States Olympic Teams.
Gionta, from Rochester, NY, played four years for the Eagles, ending his BC career as a member of the 2001 NCAA championship team, and was a first team All-America selection in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.
In addition to playing five seasons with the Devils - including their 2002-3 Stanley Cup championship season - the high-scoring Gionta is a three-time member of the USA World Championship Team (2000, 2001 and 2005).
