Former BC Philosophy Professor William J. Haggerty Dies at 88

Prof. Emeritus William J. Haggerty, Jr., a member of the philosophy faculty at Boston College from 1946 until his retirement in 1986, died on April 12 at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. He was 86.

Prof. Haggerty was hired by Boston College while completing his doctoral studies at Boston University. He was a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and added a master's degree in philosophy from Boston College before serving in the US Navy during World War II.

During his retirement, Prof. Haggerty moved from his home in Newton to Plymouth and was involved in several charitable activities on the South Shore. He is survived by his wife Sheila, four sons, four daughters and seven grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on April 18 at St. Bonaventure Church in Plymouth. Burial was in Manomet Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Bonaventure's Fund for the Needy, P.O. Box 996, Manomet, Mass. 02345.
