Former Chemistry Professor Dies

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Feb. 19 in St. Cecilia's Church in Ashland for Prof. Emeritus Robert F. O'Malley (Chemistry), who taught chemistry at Boston College from 1947 until his retirement in 1988. Prof. O'Malley died on Feb. 16 at the age of 86.

Born in Framingham, Prof. O'Malley graduated from Boston College in 1940. After serving in the US Army during World War II, he joined the Chemistry faculty in 1947 while completing his master's degree. He added a doctorate in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1961.

Prof. O'Malley was a member of the American Chemical Society, Ashland Historical Society and was a trustee of the Ashland Public Library.

He is survived by five children, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Prof. O'Malley was married to the late Margaret (Bailey) O'Malley for 56 years before her death in 2000.

Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Holliston.
