Retired BC Physics Faculty Member Francis McCaffrey Dies

Colleagues last month remembered Francis McCaffrey, a retired member of the Physics Department who died Jan. 13.

Prof. Emeritus George Goldsmith (Physics) recalled Prof. McCaffrey - who was at BC for several decades before retiring in the early 1980s - taught a general assortment of physics courses, particularly laboratory courses, and in the 1970s, pioneered the use of computers in laboratory teaching.

"He was the very first to introduce computers in the laboratory, way back when we had the earliest Apple and Commodore computers," Goldsmith said. "He taught me to use computer language in experiments."

Expressions of sympathy may be sent to his wife, Mrs. Francis McCaffrey, at: 285 East Street West Bridgewater, MA 02379.
