Don't expect kids to stand still for very long at BC's Family Fun Day.

Family Fun Day is April 23

It's April, the Red Sox have officially started defending their World Series title, Patriots Day and the Boston Marathon are coming up, and summer isn't far off - but football season will make a brief advance appearance at Boston College next weekend as part of the annual Family Fun Day on April 23.

The Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Football Game - which will offer a preview of the Eagles' squad for their first Atlantic Coast Conference season - is only one attraction of Family Fun Day, sponsored by the Athletic Association and Alumni Association.

Festivities begin at noon with music, food and family entertainment outside the Flynn Recreation Complex. There will be face-painting, inflatable games and an appearance by Baldwin the Eagle, among other amusements for kids. Following the spring football game at 2 p.m. in Alumni Stadium, players will be available for autographs and photos.

"Meeting the football players is easily one of the most popular things about Family Fun Day," said Assistant Athletic Director James Di Loreto. "The kids really love it, but so do the adults."

For those favoring more seasonal sports, the BC baseball and softball teams will both be in action at home that day: The baseball Eagles take on Georgetown in a double-header, while the softball team plays two against Rutgers; both games start at noon on Shea Field.

If that weren't enough, Di Loreto adds, Women's Basketball Appreciation Day will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Power Gym.

Whatever the sport, Family Fun Day has proven to be a success, says Di Loreto. "We get about 2,000 every year for Family Fun Day, and most of them also attend the spring football game, which usually draws 5,000. A majority of the crowd is from the BC community - employees, students, alumni - but we've also been reaching out to the surrounding communities as well."

So, is Family Fun Day helping to cultivate a future crop of BC student-athletes among the younger visitors? "Hard to judge," said Di Loreto with a laugh. "But it certainly reinforces the great social atmosphere of BC athletics."
