Gasson Professor to Speak on 'The Rights of Priests'

Gasson Professor James F. Keenan, SJ, presents the annual Gasson Lecture, "The Rights of Priests," March 16 at 4:30 p.m. in Gasson 100.

Fr. Keenan said the address will build on a keynote presentation he gave at a Church in the 21st Century conference Feb. 13-14 on the need for professional ethics in the Church.

"One of the rights of priests is due process," said Fr. Keenan, whose Church 21 address took up the ethics of mandatory AIDS testing for prospective seminarians.

"I would also like to look at the question of whether a priest has the right to preach what he believes," he said.

"In some instances the bishop will say, 'This is what I want you to preach on.' I want to explore some of that - the responsibility to the bishop, and the responsibility to one's vocation."

Fr. Keenan, a member of the New York Province who is professor of moral theology at Weston Jesuit School of Theology, holds the Gasson Chair in Theology at BC through 2005.

His research interests include fundamental moral theology; history of theological ethics; Thomas Aquinas; virtue ethics; HIV/AIDS; genetics; and Church leadership ethics.

A reception will follow the lecture.
