A Sampling of Events
A small sampling of the events taking place at this year's Boston College Arts Festival [the full schedule is available at on-line.]
- The festival's now traditional opening act features Irish music, song and dance performed by faculty and students in the Irish Studies Program. April 29, noon, O'Neill Plaza.
- Theater in the Garden: 10x4!" offers four 10-minute plays packed with humor and heart, straight from the hottest playwriting festivals in New York and New England. April 29, 1:30 p.m., St. Mary's Garden.
- BC bOp! and the BC Swing Kids will host their popular swing dance session, which is open to the public and includes lessons. April 29, 8 p.m. (lessons at 7 p.m.), O'Neill Plaza.
- Current and former members of BC bOp! also will present a special concert hosted by radio personality and Boston Globe jazz critic Ernest Santosuosso '43. May 1, 8 p.m., O'Neill Plaza.
- Musicians Among Us" showcases student and faculty talent. On April 29, the Music Guild will present student performers Chris Burke '04, Katie Lupo '07, Alex Jung '05, Kevin Brady '06, and an acoustic band, Kotter. The following day will feature faculty musicians: part-time faculty member Silvard Kool (Biology), a neo-classical pianist, and the sax-piano duo of Prof. Peter Klote (Biology) and Assoc. Prof. Ned Rosen (Mathematics), who will present "Bossa, Bop, and Cool." Both events take place starting at 4:30 p.m. in Gasson 100.
- The Arts Council will present awards honoring students and faculty for contributions to the arts at BC. April 30, 2:30 p.m., O'Neill Plaza.
- The Dance Showcase, which takes place each of the festival's three days, will feature performances by the Boston Liturgical Dance Ensemble, Chinese Student Association, Dance Ensemble, Competition Dance Team, Dance Organization, Swing Kids Dance Club, and various dance classes. - Festival attendees are welcome, and encouraged, to take part in arts events and demonstrations on O'Neill Plaza, including a sidewalk mural, theatrical scene painting and figure drawing. April 29-May 1, see schedule for times, O'Neill Plaza.
- Faculty and student-made films will be screened during the festival, including a selection with social justice themes produced through the Jacques Salmanowitz Student Film Program. April 29-May 1, see schedule for times and locations.
- Artwork in many different mediums by faculty and students will be displayed, including the Bapst Library exhibition "Crucifixion Meditations" by Fine Arts faculty members John Steczynski and Aileen Callahan. April 29-May 1, see schedule for times and locations.
- Gasson Hall will be the setting for readings of works by faculty and student writers, as well as a poetry slam. April 29-May 1, see schedule for times and locations.
- May 1 will be a day of children's activities at the festival, including arts and crafts, music and movement.
