Fr. Monan Chairing Judicial Review

Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Margaret Marshall has appointed University Chancellor J. Donald Monan, SJ, to chair a committee that will seek ways of improving the state's judicial system.

The panel will devise recommendations "regarding the standards and current effectiveness of managerial systems within the courts." Critics of Massachusetts' judicial system have cited low staffing levels, insufficient funding and factious management as among its chief problems.

Fr. Monan, who served as University president from 1972 to 1996, will be joined by committee vice-chairs Patricia McGovern, former chairwoman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, and William C. Van Faasen, president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts.

The committee is expected to complete its work early next year.
