The scholarship is given each year to a Boston College junior who exemplifies the values and ideals of martyred Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero. Archbishop Romero, known for his dedication to the poor and disenfranchised, was shot and killed by an assassin while celebrating Mass in 1980.
Criteria for the scholarship award includes dedication to learning as evidenced by academic record, service on and off campus and financial need. The scholarship represents 75 percent of the student's senior-year tuition.
Finalists for the 2003 Romero award are Juan Dejesus, Ellen Rains, Raymond Ramirez, Edgar Valdez and Stephanie Valencia.
Highlighting the evening will be performances by Venezuelan singer Alexander Faria and the dance companies Esencia Latina and Hacha y Machete. Light refreshments will be served.
