Middlemarch Ball Cancelled

Middlemarch Ball Cancelled

Fire safety concerns, prompted in part by the recent Rhode Island nightclub tragedy, have led to the cancellation of the annual Middlemarch Ball, a popular undergraduate tradition that was to celebrate its 30th anniversary tomorrow night in O'Connell House.

In a letter to students posted last week on the O'Connell House and BCInfo Web pages, Zachary Barber '04, the O'Connell House publicity and public relations manager, and Assistant Dean for Student Development Christopher Darcy said the growth of Middlemarch through the years had resulted in "a number of increasing regulations" for O'Connell House staff.

Referring to the Feb. 20 fire at a West Warwick, RI, nightclub that killed 98 people, the letter said the O'Connell House staff had taken many new precautions to "ensure the safety of all those who would attend the Ball this year."

But Newton Fire Department officials said the precautions did not satisfy city fire safety regulations and would not issue a permit for the event to take place at O'Connell, according to Barber and Darcy.
