With the collection deadline scheduled for this past Monday, and some collected funds not yet tallied as of last Friday, organizers expected the total to increase.
The initiative was launched by the Undergraduate Government of Boston College shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Some funds were given in memory of alumni and friends and in lieu of flowers for recently deceased relatives or faculty. Alumni from across the country sent notes and checks, including one graduate now teaching at a Catholic school in Oklahoma, who had learned of the fund through the Boston College BCInfo Web page and was moved by the "tremendous outpouring of love and support" offered by the University community.
"As a former member of UGBC I know you all do good work in providing students with services, advocacy, and entertainment but this is by far the best thing UGBC has ever done," wrote the alumnus. "Know that my prayers are with you a thousand miles away in Oklahoma. May God bless your work."
