Liturgies and Music to Ring in Campus Holiday Season

A Byzantine-rite Catholic Mass for the Feast of St. Nicholas on Dec. 6 will help usher in the Christmas season at Boston College.

Rev. Michael Moisin of the St. Joseph Byzantine Mission will celebrate the Holy and Divine Liturgy of our Father among the Saints, John Chrysostom, in commemoration of our Holy Father Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, at 7:30 p.m. in St. Mary's Chapel.

"The splendor of the Byzantine liturgy takes us into God's time, where the heart can grasp its own needs and present them before Him and His holy ones," said Assoc. Prof. Michael J. Connolly (Slavic and Eastern Languages), an archdeacon in the Armenian Catholic rite who will assist.

Most of the liturgy will be prayed in English, with the Andrei Rublev Chorus, directed by Mary Arapoff, performing chant in Slavonic.

The Mass for St. Nicholas is one of a number of festive offerings in liturgy and song heralding the holiday season on campus.

An annual series of sung Masses for Advent resumes at St. Mary's this Sunday at 4 p.m. with a Mass offered by Rev. James Lafontaine, SJ, of St. Ignatius Church. Music will be provided a schola led by St. Ignatius organist Timothy Zimmerman, a part-time faculty member of the Music Department.

Upcoming celebrants in the St. Mary's series include Lynch School of Education Associate Dean Joseph O'Keefe, SJ (Second Sunday of Advent), Canisius Professor of Theology Michael Buckley, SJ (Third Sunday of Advent) and St. Mary's Prefect James C. O'Brien, SJ (Fourth Sunday of Advent). All Masses are at 4 p.m.

John Finney conducts the University Chorale of Boston College and the Boston College Symphony Orchestra in their annual Christmas concerts, Dec. 8 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Chapel on Newton Campus. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $5 with Boston College student ID. Advance reservations are strongly encouraged. For information, call ext.2-4306.
