BC Holds Ecumenical Prayer and Fast to Observe End of Ramadan

In response to Pope John Paul II's call for Catholics to pray and fast for global justice and peace in solidarity with Muslims completing their Ramadan fast, members of the Boston College community gathered on Tuesday in McGuinn Hall for an ecumenical prayer and traditional Muslim worship.

The campus event, which coincided with the three-month anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, DC, was organized by Theology Department faculty members Prof. Francis Clooney, SJ, and Asst. Prof. Qamar-ul Huda.

The service began just after sundown with the sharing of food to break the fast, followed by a salat, a traditional Muslim prayer, led by Imam Salih Yucel. Following readings from holy texts and a moment of silence, those in attendance lit candles of peace while reciting the Prayer of St. Francis, then ended the event with the hymn "Amazing Grace."
