Chemistry Professor Emeritus George Vogel Dead at 73

(11-11-97) -- A Thursday memorial service is planned for Prof. Emeritus George Vogel (Chemistry), who died suddenly of heart failure on Nov. 7. He was 73.

Born May 28, 1924 in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Vogel received his doctoral degree in chemistry from the Prague Technical University in 1950. After escaping persecution by the Communist regime, he launched his teaching career as a professor of chemistry at the University of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, followed by a year of post-doctoral research studies at Ohio State University, prior to coming to Boston College in 1956 as assistant professor of organic chemistry. During the 1965-66 academic year, he spent a sabbatical year on a grant at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, working on the research team of Dr. Vladimir Prelog, who later received the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

When Vogel retired as full professor from Boston College in 1994, after 38 years of service, he was granted the status of professor emeritus.

Vogel was a member of the American Chemical Society, as well as of numerous Boston cultural organizations. He served on the board of the Newton Conservators, and as president of the Masaryk Club of Boston, a Czechoslovak organization, for three years.

A violinist with a love of classical music since childhood, he often played chamber music with a quartet. His interests also included learning languages, nature, traveling, seeking ways in which to improve applications of computer technology in chemistry. He also was a carpenter who built his Maine summer home by himself, and he enjoyed commuting to Boston College by bicycle for many years.

Vogel leaves his wife Jarmila Vogel of Newton; daughter Mirella Vogel of Lausanne, Switzerland; son Ian, daughter-in-law Christiane and grandson Nathan Vogel of Geneva, Switzerland; and stepson Thomas Emerson Jaffa of Seattle.

The memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Chapel on Nov. 13 at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Vogel's memory to the WGBH Educational Fund, 125 Western Ave., Boston, MA 02134.
