BOSTON COLLEGE STATEMENT UPDATING REVIEW OF RUMORS AND ALLEGATIONS OF GAMBLING ACTIVITY

(11-5-96) -- The Office of Public Affairs issued the following statement last night.

Dr. Kevin P. Duffy, Boston College Vice President for Student Affairs and chair of the University committee reviewing rumors and allegations of gambling among student athletes, tonight announced the membership of the internal review committee and the role it will perform.

Members of the committee, in addition to Duffy, are: Human Resources Employee Relations Director Richard Jefferson; Carroll Graduate School of Management Dean Hassell McClellan; Police Chief Robert Morse; Economics Professor Joseph Quinn; Dean for Student Development Robert Sherwood; and Legal Counsel for University Affairs Rev. Dennis Yesalonia, SJ.

McClellan and Sherwood are members of the university's Athletic Advisory Board, and Quinn is chairman of that board in addition to being the university's faculty representative to athletics.

Duffy described the role of the committee as threefold:

-- to provide appropriate institutional oversight of all internal aspects of the current investigation into rumors about gambling on campus among student athletes;

-- to review findings from investigative sources and make recommendations about possible University follow-up;

-- to assure that the process is conducted with fairness, justice and compassion.

Duffy said the University continues to cooperate fully with the Middlesex County District Attorney's office in its ongoing investigation of the rumors and allegations. Duffy characterized the progress of the investigation as thorough and productive, but declined further comment pending the outcome of the investigation.
