NCAA Announces Decision On Boston College Football Players

(7-24-97) -- The National Collegiate Athletic Association has notified Boston College officials of its decision regarding the University's petition for reinstatement of athletic eligibility for six football players. Those six individuals were among 13 student athletes identified last fall by the University as participating in illegal gambling activities, all of whom were declared ineligible for the final three games of the 1996 football season.

Since the petition was filed, one of the six student athletes has suffered a career-ending medical condition. With respect to the remaining five players, the NCAA has made the following determinations:

-Two players have had their eligibility for the 1997 football season reinstated, effective immediately.
-Two players will serve an additional two-game suspension, to be carried out at the start of the 1997 football season.
-One player has been suspended for the first four games of the 1997 season.

Boston College will have no further comment regarding the decisions.
