(8-7-97)--A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Nantucket for Berkley Faul Matthews, a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences who was killed in an auto accident outside St. Louis on Aug. 2. She was 19.
Matthews, of New Canaan, Conn., was returning with three high school friends from a summer vacation in Telluride, Colo., when the accident occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Interstate 70 in Bond County, Ill., 39 miles east of St. Louis.
Boston College friends remembered Matthews as an upbeat and popular young woman who enjoyed skiing and roller hockey, and whose artwork had been hung in the gallery in the Lower Campus Dining Hall.
"She was the happiest person I ever knew," said Erica Cashman, '00, who planned to share a Brighton apartment with Matthews and five other roommates this fall. "She was a great friend. She knew everybody and everybody knew her.
Former Fitzpatrick Hall floormate Elizabeth Lane, '00, said, "She had a really positive outlook on life. She never really took things too seriously and never got angry or upset about stupid things other people would get upset about."
In addition to this weekend's service on Nantucket, a second memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 23 at St. Mark's Church in New Canaan, Conn.
