Statement From Boston College Regarding Rumors of Gambling Activity by Boston College Football Players

(11-4-96)--The Office of Public Affairs issued the following statement yesterday.

"As reported by University officials [on Nov. 2], Boston College is continuing to review rumors of gambling activity by members of its football team. The University is cooperating fully with the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office. The University also is in the process of establishing an internal review committee under the direction of Dr. Kevin P. Duffy, vice president for Student Affairs. In addition, the University has advised the [National Collegiate Athletic Association] that it has taken steps to respond to the allegations about student gambling.

"In response to continuing speculation about the status of certain athletes, it should be noted at this time that no athlete has been suspended from the football team for gambling.

"It is inappropriate to comment in any way about the status of the review at this time, since it still is in an early fact-finding stage."
