(12-17-97) -- Boston College President William P. Leahy, SJ, joined Boston Mayor Thomas Menino today at the Boston College Neighborhood Center to distribute awards from the Boston College Community Fund.
Fourteen Allston-Brighton community organizations and schools received awards from the fund, which was created as part of an agreement reached with the Boston Redevelopment Authority regarding an expansion of Alumni Stadium in 1993. Boston College contributes $75,000 annually to the fund and awards are distributed twice a year.
Organizations receiving were: the LINCS Program of the Allston/Brighton Healthy Boston Coalition; Brighton Main Streets; Allston Village Main Streets; The Gardner School; Friends of Oak Square; St. Anthony's School; the North Zone Early Learning Center and Jackson Mann Community Center; the Commonwealth Tenants Association; the Allston/Brighton Community Development Corp.; St. Columbkille's School; B'Nai B'Rith Covenant House; Aberdeen and Reservoir Civic Association; and the Allston Civic Association.
The grant winners were chosen by a nine-member committee that includes: former City Councilor Brian McLaughlin; Nancy Grilk, assistant to City Councilor Brian Honan; Theresa Hynes; Mark Ciommo; Jerry Quinn; Anne Mulligan; Mel Cohen; Boston College Community Affairs Director Jean McKeigue; and Boston College PULSE Program Director David McMenamin.
