(1-21-99) -- A water main rupture affecting several buildings on Middle Campus is not expected to cause delays or cancellation of classes or other University operations, Boston College administrators said this morning.
The rupture occurred last night between Cushing and Campion halls, said Buildings and Grounds Director Thomas Devine, and forced a shutdown of water service to those buildings, as well as Higgins, Fulton and McGuinn halls and the Service Building.
Devine said service would likely be restored by the end of the day, and the University was taking every precaution -- including notifying the Newton Fire Department -- in its efforts to keep the buildings open.
Devine said B&G had installed a temporary water line to the central heating plant housed in the Service Building, enabling it to continue functioning. Another temporary line has been set up to provide water for research facilities in Higgins, he added.
"We expect the University to operate as normally as possible," said Devine.
