(6-7-99) -- Associate Dean for Student Development Carole Hughes has been appointed as the University's harassment counselor, Vice President for Human Resources Leo V. Sullivan has announced.
Hughes' appointment took effect June 1. She succeeds Student Services Academic Team Leader Kathleen McGuinness, who had served in the position for two years.
As harassment counselor, Hughes will advise all parties in cases of alleged sexual, racial or other harassment on the job or in the classroom. She will explain procedures used to confirm and resolve incidents of harassment, and will work with University administrators to review grievances.
Hughes also will head the Harassment Resource Network, a group of volunteers across campus who are available to answer questions confidentially and discuss options for stopping an offensive situation or preventing one from forming.
A confidential hotline at ext. 2-0486 allows callers to reach Hughes directly with questions or grievances related to harassment in the workplace or classroom.
"People need to know there is a mechanism at Boston College to objectively review any instances in which harassment is alleged," said Sullivan. "I think Carole is an excellent choice as counselor. She has the presence, judgment and wisdom to deal with the various issues involved."
Hughes is an 11-year veteran of the Student Development Office who last month received a doctorate in higher education from the Lynch School of Education.
"I encourage anyone with a concern in this area to give me a call," she said. "I feel that I'm very approachable and anything I can do to help I certainly will try to do. The University takes the issue of discriminatory harassment very seriously."
