MBA Students Compete in Business Plan Contest

(12-17-99) - Four teams of first-year MBA students have been named winners in the Carroll Graduate School of Management's 1999 Business Plan Presentations competition.

The semester-long competition, in which the five-member teams were asked to establish, organize, finance and market a fictional start-up business venture, was capped by oral presentations before a jury of CGSOM faculty and professional business executives on Dec. 16. The entire first-year class of MBA students formed the 20 teams that participated.

The winning team projects were "Laser Frame, LLC," a proposed picture framing venture; "Wee Care Day Care Center," a child care project; "PAWSibilities, Inc.," a high-scale pet care service; and "KidSci," a children's educational software proposal.

"The purpose of the competition is to get our first year students learning how to integrate management functions and bring together factors such as human resources, finance, marketing, production and operations in a single project," said Assoc. Prof. Michael Peters (Marketing) one of the competition's coordinators.

"We think this is a great learning experience and one of the best ways of teaching how all these factors come together" in a business project, he said.

CGSOM Dean Hassell McClellan agreed that the hands-on approach is beneficial in preparing MBA candidates for real-world business experiences.

"It's part of a series of things that we do to give our students a competitive advantage" in the business world, he said. "It clearly distinguishes our program and our students."

Leo Chause, retired CEO of BTM Capital and one of the judges for the competition, said that the maturity level and polish" of the student projects was often "as good as you would see in the business world.

"I really think that there might be people in the capital venture field who would invest in some of these ideas," he added.
