University Affiliates Program is Launched

(11-16-99) - The first nine candidates in the University Affiliates Program, an initiative to enhance the ability of AHANA staff to advance their careers at Boston College, are preparing to begin internships next week.

"We are so pleased that this has come to pass," said Vice President for Human Resources Leo V. Sullivan in his welcoming remarks at a Nov. 11 breakfast and day-long orientation event. The program will provide a means for employees of color to "gain exposure to BC as a whole," he said, and "achieve what we're really trying to achieve here, which is an exceptionally diverse and enriched workforce."

Executive Vice President Frank B. Campanella, who conducted the first part of the orientation session, added, "There's a great deal of enthusiasm and anticipation about this program."

The University Affiliates Program was designed by the offices of Affirmative Action and AHANA Student Programs with the Irish Institute, which is providing administrative oversight and organization. Participants serve internships, attend monthly professional development events and are mentored by BC senior administrators, including Campanella and Sullivan, in areas such as communications strategies, academic and student affairs, and financial management.

This experience is intended to enrich the professional skills of African-American, Hispanic, Asian and Native American employees and improve their credentials for future administrative positions.

Participants are scheduled to begin internship assignments -- which they will serve while working in their current jobs -- next week and monthly professional development sessions the following week. Campanella will host the first, providing an overview of his office's responsibilities and duties, and discussing financial and enrollment management in higher education. Future sessions will focus on other vice-presidential divisions as well as race and integration issues, and national and international perspectives.

The inaugural University Affiliates said they felt confident the program would offer them valuable insights into the inner workings of BC, and support their long-term career goals.

"I am hoping to continue developing leadership skills," said Programmer Analyst Christina Ellison. "I want very much to be a contributor to the University community and it's great that BC can facilitate this growth in our professional lives."

"The program looked to me like a good fit," said Alumni Association Assistant Director Nampeera Kayonda. "I feel it will give me some hands-on experience and knowledge, and allow me to see BC in many different ways."

At the Nov. 11 orientation session, Campanella led a discussion on general aspects of management, inviting the program participants to share their views on the importance of leadership, organization, guidance and other qualities deemed necessary for managers. He also spoke about his own experiences as an administrator, and drew a comparison between management issues in higher education and other professions.

Other speakers during the orientation included Vice President for Mission and Ministry Joseph A. Appleyard, SJ, Prof. Joe Raelin (CSOM) and Irish Institute Director Sean Rowland.

Other University Affiliates are Learning to Learn Assistant Director Rossanna Contreras, O'Neill Library Acquisition Assistant Juan Carlos Gallego, Financial Services Associate Marsia Hill, AHANA Student Programs Assistant Director Joana Maynard, Programmer Analyst Ka Wah Ng, Technology Consultant Dao Thach and Human Resources Manager Anita Ulloa.
