Author Randall Robinson speaks Feb. 24 in Robsham Theater

(2-21-2000) - Randall Robinson, author of The Debt: What America Owes to Blacks, visits Robsham Theater on Thursday, Feb. 24 to address his proposition that the United States make financial reparations to African-Americans for slavery.

The author will sign copies of his book at 7 p.m., then speak at 7:30. A reception will follow the lecture, to which the public is invited.

Robinson, a Harvard-trained attorney and founding director of the TransAfrica lobbying group that advocated forcefully for divestment in apartheid-era South Africa, argues in his new book that reparations are owed Africans and African-Americans in restitution for slavery. He proposes long-term public funding of a trust fund to support comprehensive education and economic empowerment programs for black Americans, while also advocating across-the-board debt relief for African nations.

The lecture is the first in a series of events being jointly sponsored on campus by the Black Studies and the Irish Studies departments at Boston College.
