University set to welcome students for new academic year

(8-28-2000) A welcoming liturgy concelebrated by University President William P. Leahy, SJ, and Director of Campus Ministry James Erps, SJ, will be among the highlights of Opening Week 2000 at Boston College.

During this period, which formally begins on Thursday, new and returning students will be moving into campus or off-campus housing and attending various activities at BC or elsewhere in Boston.

The Mass will be held on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 5 p.m. in the Rose Garden adjacent to St. Mary's Hall. Fr. Erps, who arrived at Boston College this summer from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, will offer his first homily at a University liturgy. In the event of rain the Mass will be take place in Conte Forum.

Other events during the week will include a carnival on the Campus Green on Monday, Sept. 4, from noon to 5 p.m., and a keynote address by one-time MTV "Real World" regular Kevin Powell on Thursday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. in Conte Forum. Powell, an author, poet and former Vibe magazine editor, replaces the previously scheduled speaker, television personality Bertice Berry.

Residence halls will be open on Sept. 2 and the check-in time and key distribution will be from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Students arriving Sept. 5-8 can check in and pick up their keys in the Office of University Housing in Rubenstein Hall.
