University to host Latin Mass and Benediction today, Marian Mass on May 6

(4-27-2000)In a liturgical meeting of East and West, Mass and Benediction will be celebrated in Latin today at 5 p.m. in Cushing Chapel, and a Mass honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary will be said in the Byzantine Rite on Bapst Lawn at noon on Saturday, May 6. The Faculty Early Music Group will perform on both occasions.

At today's Mass, which will be held in the Cushing Hall Chapel, Rev. Prof. Matthew Lamb (Theology) will offer a Latin Mass (1970 Missal) for Easter Thursday, with commemoration of Jesuit St. Peter Canisius. Chant will be performed by Assoc. Prof. Michael Connolly (Slavic and Eastern Languages) and Language Laboratory Director Cynthia Nicholson Bravo of the Faculty Early Music Group. The Mass will be followed by Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament and 24-hour Eucharistic adoration in the chapel.

On Saturday, May 6, at noon on Bapst Lawn, Rev. Michael Moisin of St. Mary Byzantine Mission will say a Mass in the Byzantine Rite in honor of Mary, the Mother of God, followed by the Rosary and Coronation of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary as Queen of the Universe. Music will be contributed by the Faculty Early Music Group and other invited performers. In the event of rain, the Mass will be said in St. Mary's Chapel.
