Devine appointed associate vice president for facilities management

(6-30-2000) Boston College has named Buildings and Grounds Director Thomas Devine to the position of associate vice president for facilities management, effective July 15.

Under a reorganization plan announced today, the University's current planning and construction division will be consolidated with Buildings and Grounds, resulting in a single facilities management division that will be directed by Devine. In this new role he will be responsible for overseeing the planning, design and construction of University capital projects, as well as the overall maintenance of campus facilities and grounds.

In announcing the appointment, Executive Vice President Frank B. Campanella called Devine a "natural choice" to succeed Alfred Pennino, who announced his retirement as associate vice president for planning and construction last week.

"Tom Devine brings a wealth of experience in facilities maintenance, operations and construction to this new role," said Campanella. "I have great confidence in him and in his ability to manage our physical facilities and the many new projects now on the drawing board."

Vice President for Human Resources Leo Sullivan offered a similar assessment. "Having worked with Tom Devine over the past six years, I am convinced that he will do an excellent job in this new position," said Sullivan. "He has earned this opportunity from the work he has done and the respect he has garnered from his staff and colleagues at Boston College."

A graduate of Rhode Island College, Devine came to BC in 1994 as director of buildings and grounds. He had previously served as director of facilities and operations at the University of Rhode Island and as superintendent of plant maintenance at General Dynamics' Electric Boat Division.

Upon assuming his position, Devine says he hopes to achieve a closer integration between planning and construction functions and the day-to-day maintenance operations of the University.

"Boston College has a longstanding tradition of quality construction and excellent facilities in support of its academic mission," said Devine. "To have a role in the construction, planning and development of the future of Boston College is an exciting opportunity. I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead."
