Boston College Chaplaincy is asking BC alumni to enhance the spiritual life of the students by volunteering for either or both of two growing programs. In Boston, Rev. Terrence Devino, SJ, Coordinator of Sacrament Life, is directing the Marriage Preparation Program. The goal of sacramental preparation is to enable the couple to understand marriage as sacrament, as covenant, and vocation. In a second two-day session planned in April, the sponsor couples will participate, not as experts with all the answers, but as fellow pilgrims on a journey fraught with risks and struggles, as well as joy, commitment and love. Call Fr. Devino at 617-552-1596 for information on how you can help. Marriage Prep was originally coordinated by John Savard, SJ, and Maura King Scully of the Alumni Office. Maura has moved on to become the first director for development communications for the Archdiocese of Boston. WeÕd like to thank Maura for her many efforts which resulted in the programÕs rich success. WeÕll miss her and we wish her all the best in her exciting new career. Fr. Savard has moved on to lead the Ignacio Volunteers - an international immersion program which enables alumni and students to work in another culture. At a recent fund raiser, Rev. Joseph Appleyard, vice president for university missions and ministry, expounded, "Before education, the Jesuits began their mission by helping plague victims . . . intelligent people who flocked to them were sent to service other countries." Father Savard summed up the studentsÕ testimonials by stating "We go to change the world and we change ourselves." Please consider joining these student pioneers as chaperones or mentors, or as health care, education or spiritual guides; it may change your life. As one student put it, "The appreciation you gain stays with you when you return." Call 617-552-2799 to find out how you can get involved as an alumni volunteer.
